Youth Service Trip to the Seafarer’s Mission Sunday May 4

Volunteers from Saint Paul youth will staff “Opening Day” at the Seafarer’s Mission in Boston on Sunday, May 4. We will worship at the 8AM service and carpool to the mission and work from 10am to 4pm. Director Steve Cushing tells us we will be the first group for the season’s first visitors. The mission provides assistance to those from around the world who work far from home on the dozens of cruise ships that pass through Boston. Steve recently emailed: “Thank you for volunteering St. Paul’s for May 4. I just want to let you know that on that day the Ship “Norwegian Dream” will actually be docked one block away in Dry Dock (for a week). I am planning on being open and getting word to the ship that we will be open for the crew. We should have a good day, but a little less traffic than a normal cruise ship day.” Sunday will be the first day the crew can come to the mission. Curtis Adams and Toni Chancellor-Adams will be among the adult chaperones. Our youth will be contacted for participation this month.

Honor your Mother this Mothers Day!

This Mothers Day, honor your mother (or someone else special) by helping mothers in some of the poorest parts of the world have a safe childbirth experience.

Every expectant mother hopes for the safe birth of a healthy newborn, but in many parts of the world safety can be compromised by lack of basic healthcare supplies. In many poor countries most births take place at home attended by local traditional midwives. The midwife has training and knowledge to handle most births, but often does not have the very basic equipment, such as a clean cloth for the mother to lie on, a suitable instrument to cut the umbilical cord, or a towel to dry and wrap the baby. Maternal and infant death due to infection is not uncommon. Some simple supplies can make a huge difference.

The St. Paul Social Ministry Committee is sponsoring our 4th

Midwife Kit Project

Together we will create kits which will be sent via Global Health Ministries (www.ghm.org) to Lutheran healthcare missions in various parts of the world. The kits will be used by local midwives to help make deliveries safer and more welcoming for mothers and babies.

There are several ways you can be a part of this important project:

· Make a monetary donation. Every $15 sponsors the making of one kit, shipping, and training local midwives who will use them

· Make a donation of your time by coming to church on Wednesday, June 11th at 7 p.m. to help assemble the kits

· Pray for the mothers and babies who will receive the kits
