SPY-St. Paul Youth
Youth Service Trip to the Seafarer’s Mission Sunday May 4Hi Everyone, It is that time of year when the cruise ships set sail and Saint Paul Youth (SPY) head to the New England Seafarer's Mission for a day of work in a very international environment. You will serve workers from all over the world meeting their needs in what can be a very lonely life working on a cruise ship with 6 months to 1 year between visits home. We help them transfer their cash home, purchase phone cards, make phone calls, mail letters etc. It is a great day and you will speak with people from Asia, Russia, Canada etc. If you aren't familiar with the mission, check them out at www.neseafarers.org. The details: We will gather at Saint Paul for the 8:00 am service together and then depart for Boston Harbor, the Black Falcon Port, which is about a 15 minute drive on a Sunday morning. Each person needs to bring their own lunch, drinks are available on site. We will work until 3 to 4pm depending on how busy things are and then head back to Saint Paul. For kids in Arlington I am happy to drop them at home. From outside Arlington it would be great if you could pick them up at church. On the drive back we will give a call using my cell phone so we can meet conveniently. It is a great experience and this is a good day to get trained as only 1 ship is in port. When we help again later in the summer (informal youth trip) it will be very busy as they will have many ships in port then. So please let me know with a reply confirming that you will come (or your child) and I can make sure we have sufficient drivers. I will be taking my van which seats 6 additional kids and Tony and Curtis have graciously agreed to bring both cars to drive if we have a large turn out. For high school students: If your school has community service requirements, bring your form and I will sign for 6 to 7 community service hours required for high school graduation (Arlington school requirement, maybe others also). For kids in 8th grade, if you go again in the summer I will sign your form for 12 hours (after the summer visit) and you'll be well on your way to your 40 hours. It's a great day to be Christ's hands in reaching out to others with much more difficult lives than we experience! Looking forward to hearing from you. Kim Fechtel |
